In rivers, lakes, ponds and vast oceans, we have always set out to catch those that dwell beneath the shimmering azure of the water’s surface. Barmouth is an angler’s paradise, with myriad fish on offer in the estuary and ocean beyond, including cod, bass, dabs, dogfish, eels, flounder, mullet and more. If you’re staying with us at Barmouth Bay for the summer, then mackerel is one of the best things to look out for.

If it’s the fishing you want to try while you’re over here with us, then take a look at this list of some of the best spots in the area that we have prepared for you:

North Beach

Located at the north end of the promenade, about 1 mile from the town, you’ll find a car park from which you can access this great fishing spot. At high tide, you can fish straight from the sea wall, with many species of fish ready for catching at any time. If you can’t manage from the sea wall, explore the available spots and see where works best for you.

Beach Town End

This interesting area of beach is close to an old sewer pipe, and so not exactly the top choice for bathers. It is, on the other hand, a fantastic angling spot, particularly if you want to catch dogfish, bass and flatties.

Island Area

Just south of Beach Town End, there is the Island area, which is actually an island no longer. Walk across the causeway, and at low tide you can go further across the sands and fish the estuary channel. Watch out for the changing tide, because it is easy to get cut off.

This is a good spot for children using crab lines. If the kids are at their child’s play fishing, but you fancy more of a challenge while at the Harbour, you can also go for the mullet using fine float fishing tackle and either small ragworm or bread as bait.
