Guide to Cycling Holidays Around Barmouth Bay

27th August 2015 Published by

Afon_MawddachIt’s very easy to casually throw around a phrase like “a cyclist’s paradise” when talking about many regions of the UK, but when it comes to Barmouth, and indeed the whole of Wales, it couldn’t be more true. For this reason, and for further reasons we shall explore now, it is essential that you load up your bikes when you’re getting ready for your next stay with us at Barmouth Bay.

Located within beautiful Snowdonia, Barmouth is lucky to also be situated on one of the key stages of the Lon Las Cymru (National Cycle Route 8). This national route, if cycled in full, would take one from Holyhead in the north down to Cardiff in the south. The pride and joy of Barmouth’s own local cycling attractions remains the absolutely splendid Mawddach Trail, a 10-mile route, utterly free of road traffic, from Barmouth to Dolgellau. Starting on the splendid wooden viaduct and following the railway along the Mawddach Estuary, the route offers unbeatable open views northward to the wooded hills, as well as the captivating views across the estuary and coast. If you’re in the mood for some refreshment along the way, you could stop at the lovely George III Hotel at Penmaenpool, which comes highly recommended by local and tourist alike.

Mind you, the Mawddach Trail may offer the views, nice day out, and gentle riding that some crave when biking, but for others it’s just enough of a thrill. If you want to add an adrenaline rush, then you should head up north from Barmouth to Antur Stiniog. This former slate quarry now offers some of the most challenging and exciting downhill biking trails in all of Wales, perhaps even the UK. The centre also offers a bike wash service, bike coaching, adventure packages, events and much more. Spectators may also be interested in the café and shop on site.

If you need to know more about open cycle routes within striking distance of Barmouth, the local tourist information centre does offer comprehensive cycling maps. Whether you’re looking for a gentle pedal or a downhill rush, there’s certainly something in the area!
