About West Mersea Beach

Stretching along the southern shore of Mersea Island, West Mersea Beach is a lovely sand and shingle south-facing beach. Lined by a long esplanade, it’s the perfect spot for a relaxing day in the sunshine with the whole family. The local area grew up as a small fishing village, and is now a tourist hotspot which retains its laid-back, old-fashioned feel through its seaside culture and collection of shops, restaurants and pubs. There are also beach huts for added convenience, while dogs are welcome on the beach all year round.

How to get to West Mersea Beach

The B1025 leads almost right to the beach from the centre of Colchester, which is less than 10 miles north. The A12 passes just to the north of town, which is a main road running all the way from Ipswich in the north east to London in the south west. The beach is only a 20-minute drive from either junction 27 or 29. If you prefer to arrive by public transport, Colchester is only a 45-minute train ride from London Liverpool Street station. Norwich is a similar journey away, while you can catch the number 63 bus from Osborne Street in the centre of town to the Underwoods Garage stop on Kingsland Road, just a short stroll from the beach.
