Visit Cornwall has reported a rise in day visitors to the area in summer 2025, marking a rebound year for the local tourism industry.

In an exceedingly busy summer period, Cornwall static caravan sales provider Away Resorts has compiled the 5 most underrated walks in Cornwall, for quieter walks away from the main tourist trails. Visitors have been urged to avoid the most popular spots, with popular destinations including Newquay, St Ives and Padstow seeing severe traffic congestion during peak seasons.

1. Levant, Botallack and the Crowns Trail

Taking between 1.5-2 hours, this walk along the South West Coast Path crosses a patchwork of fields, while offering sights of iconic mine chimneys and engine houses. Views include the Botallack Count House and the world-famous Levant Beam Engine, with car parking at Pendeen Car Park (TR19 7DW).

2. Godrevy Head

At just 0.6 miles, this section of the South West Coast Path offers sweeping views across St Ives Bay, along Godrevy Head Lighthouse. This route offers a short stroll along the headland – be sure to keep an eye out for local wildlife, being a popular spot for grey seals. Find car parking at two National Trust sites, following directions for TR27 5ED.

3. Vault Beach

Vault Beach is accessible either by parking at Gorran Haven and walking the coast path southwards, or driving to Lamledra car park and walking the footpath to Vault Beach. Walkers can follow a 4.9 mile circular route from Gorran Haven to Dodman Point, including the bays of Mevagissey, and Veryan and Hemmick Beach.

4. Penberth Cove

Penberth Cove is a tiny fishing hamlet just to the east of Porthcurno. Car parking is also fairly limited; combined with its secluded location, this makes Penberth Cove an exclusive gem. Being sheltered, it makes a great spot for a stop-off swim, though take extra care with no lifeguard service available.

Follow maps for TR19 6HJ, reaching the car park on the road down towards the cove. Walkers can take a 3 mile circular route from Penberth Cove to Porthcurno, or a more challenging 7.6 mile loop to St Buryan.

5. The Great Flat Lode Trail

A 7.5 mile circular walk with a few steep sections, the Great Flat Lode Trail lets you soak in the Cornish industrial heritage and beautiful open countryside. The trail follows part of the Basset Mine Tramway built to carry tin ore from the mines along the side of the valley. Visitors will also enjoy panoramic views, including the tall steel headgear of South Crofty, Cornwall’s last tin mine.

Find parking at South Wheal Frances car park, TR16 6JX. Ensure to wear appropriate footwear, with the route classed as challenging.

Kate Watts, spokesperson for Away Resorts, said:

“With a rise in the popularity of staycations, popular beauty spots across the UK can become especially busy in recent years. It’s important to go off the beaten path to find a bit of peace and quiet, avoid the traffic and reduce impact to the local ecology. With hundreds of secluded spots to pick from across Cornwall, you’ll always be able to find true wilderness”.
