Spooky staycations this Halloween: Away Resorts reveal haunted destinations
 

Isle of Wight

  • Carisbrooke Castle (PO30 1XY): Located within easy reach of Away Resorts' The Bay Colwell, The Lakes Rookley, St Helens, and Whitecliff Bay resorts, Carisbrooke Castle offers a haunting experience. Legend has it that a spectral gray lady, accompanied by her husband and a pack of dogs, roams the grounds, ensuring that her beloved home is well-preserved.
     
  • Arreton Manor (PO30 3AA): Just a short drive from The Bay Colwell, The Lakes Rookley, St Helens, and Whitecliff Bay resorts, Arreton Manor is home to the ghost of Annabelle Leigh, a young girl who met a tragic end in the manor. Her apparition and mournful cries can be heard in the dead of night.  
     
  • Golden Hill Fort (PO40 9SJ): Only 5 minutes’ drive away from The Bay Colwell, Golden Hill Fort building which was once an army barracks, is said to be haunted by the ghost of a sailor who was put to death after it was discovered he had been trading secrets to the enemy. The sailor is said to still roam the halls of Golden Hill Fort. Visitors to Golden Hill Fort have also reported encounters with a man dressed in full army uniform - the spirit is believed to be that of a World War One sergeant major who died under mysterious circumstances.

Essex

  • Layer Marney Tower (CO5 9US): Just a 25-minute drive from Mersea Island Holiday Park, Layer Marney Tower is considered one of the most haunted places in Essex. Lord Henry Marney, who never saw the tower's completion, is said to roam the grounds, ready for a battle that will never come. 
     
  • Red Lion Hotel (CO1 1DJ): This 25-minute journey from Away Resorts’ Mersea Island brings you to the Red Lion Hotel, where the ghost of Alice Katherine Miller, a chambermaid who met a tragic end, is said to wander the halls. Sightings date back over 200 years.

Hampshire

  • The Medieval Merchant’s House (SO14 2AT): Just 30 minutes away from Sandy Balls Holiday Village, The Medieval Merchant’s House is one of the earliest surviving houses in England. Its history and architecture make it a remarkable visit.
     
  • Wymering Manor (PO6 3NL): Just a 20-minute drive from Mill Rythe, Wymering Manor is supposedly the most haunted building in Portsmouth. Over 20 ghosts are said to haunt this ancient manor.

Yorkshire

  • The Golden Fleece Pub (YO1 9UP): Located less than an hour’s drive from The Bay Filey, situated in the heart of York, The Golden Fleece Pub, a 15th-century inn, is said to be one of the most haunted pubs in the city. Lady Alice Peckett, the wife of the former mayor and owner, is a prominent ghostly presence.
     
  • Mother Shipton's Cave (HG5 8DD): Located just 30 minutes from Woodland Lakes, this attraction offers a captivating experience with a history dating back over 500 years.

Dorset

  • Corfe Castle (BH20 5EZ): Just a 45-minute drive from East Fleet Farm Touring Park  and Swanage Bay View, Corfe Castle is shrouded in history and legend.
     
  • Athelhampton House (DT2 7LG): A 35-minute drive from East Fleet Farm and Swanage Bay View, Athelhampton House is known for ghostly happenings, including the Grey Lady and phantom cat.
     
  • Tyneham (BH20 5QF): 30 minutes from Swanage Bay View, Tyneham is a "lost" village with haunting experiences.

Lincolnshire

Cornwall

  • Jamaica Inn Restaurant (PL15 7TS): Just a short drive from Bude Holiday Resort, Newperran, Newquay Holiday Resort, Retallack, and St Ives Bay, The Jamaica Inn is a famous haunt on Bodmin Moor. A malevolent highwayman in a three-cornered hat is a notable apparition, often seen walking through doors.  
     
  • Bodmin Jail (PL31 2NR): Located less than 35 mins drive from Newperran, Newquay and Retallack, Bodmin Jail was once known for its public hangings. The jail, now a museum, is filled with eerie tales, including the restless spirit of Selina Wedge.
     
  • Pendennis Castle (TR11 4LP): Less than an hour’s drive from Newperran Holiday Resort, Retallack Resort and St Ives Bay Beach Resort, Pendennis Castle, constructed by Henry VIII, has a history marked by a well-documented siege. Ghostly experiences include disembodied screams and phantom footsteps on an isolated staircase.
