Exploring Hayling Island By Bike – Plan Ahead for Spring!

19th January 2015 Published by

square-bikeridingHayling Island is a grand spot for all manner of outdoor activities, owing mostly to its more reliably good weather compared with much of the UK. It is also, however, especially well suited for cycling due to its lack of hills or steep slopes, and incredible proximity to some of the UK’s most stunning coastal scenery, including that of the South Downs National Park.

There are many potential cycle routes that one might take, and below we’ve listed three ideas for you to try:

The Hayling Island Circular:

This route covers just more than 14 miles, and as mentioned above it is easygoing and gentle. Setting off from the Station Theatre, you can be done with the whole route in well under 2 hours, and it will take to every corner of the island. It does include parts of Hayling Billy (detailed below), which offers stunning views of Langstone Harbour.

Hayling Billy:

A much shorter route at just 5 or so miles, but it is all on beautiful coastal paths and all off-road. The paths on the Billy trail are maintained in a fashion that promotes wildlife, which can add a little something extra to your trail if you’re a nature lover. What’s more, it will take you toward some of the island’s and surrounding historical sites, such as St. Peter’s Church, historic Havant with its Gazebo Garden and heritage museum, and more.

South_downsThe South Downs:

Those not wanting to travel further without following a prescribed route that a Hayling local might know about may be interested in heading a bit further north into the South Downs National Park.

The South Downs is Britain’s newest national park, officially declared in just 2011. It houses more than 1600 square kilometers of stunning scenery, including the chalk downlands, the dramatic chalk cliffs of the Seven Sisters and many more exciting routes that will get the heart racing and eyes popping.
