Fun Family Holidays Around Portsmouth

27th May 2015 Published by

coral-reef-220x220It’s almost June, and you may still feel like those July summer holidays are miles away! But, they’re a lot closer than you think, and if you haven’t already, then now would be a good time to look into booking a fun break for the family. Why not join us at Mill Rythe Holiday Village? It’s the perfect base from which to explore beautiful Hayling Island, and the amazing city of Portsmouth. Let’s take a look at some of the great family-friendly activities on offer in and around Portsmouth:

The Portsmouth City Museum:

A great place to start, especially if this is your first time to Portsmouth, the museum will give you a comprehensive and informative introduction to the city, and you may be on time to catch some great events in their annual calendar. The museum itself will certainly “wow” the kids, with its castle-like appearance, its turrets and pointed roofs. Inside, you’ll see a fantastic presentation of how life in Portsmouth has changed over the years, with reconstructions of the Victorian parlour, the 1930s kitchen, and a 1950s living room. Check out the website for more details.

Blue Reef Aquarium:

Museums aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, particularly younger kids. So, take them somewhere more engaging! The Blue Reef Aquarium houses stingrays, sharks, otters, tropical fish, crabs, lobsters, reptiles, amphibians and much more. As a seaside and port town itself, Portsmouth has a natural and profound connection to all things aquatic and maritime. Take the kids down to see some of the most amazing marine and animal life with a trip to Blue Reef.

Located on Sea Front Road, the Hayling Island Railway is already a local favourite now undergoing some more work after approval was given late in 2014 for a move of the depot. Running for just over 1 mile between Beachlands and Eastoke Corner, this railway is fun for the whole family, and even the dog if you like! It’s a great way to see the best bits of the island, including the beautiful seaside scenery.

Hayling Island Beach:

If you’re at Beachlands catching the train, then why not, upon your return, head down to spend some time together at the beautiful Hayling Island Beach? It boasts the International Blue Flag and the Solent Water Quality Award, denoting high standards of beach management and high water quality respectively. Don’t forget your bucket and spade!

Pirate Pete’s Indoor Play:

As much as we might pray for it to stay nice out, we just can’t predict what the weather will do. Therefore, we thought it was a good idea to include an idea for a rainy day if you want to keep the younger kids occupied. This fantastic play centre, located in Southsea, offers very reasonable entrance rates, and the perfect chance to let your little ones burn off that excess energy and have a bucket load of fun in the process.
