walking-festivalHave you got your walking boots ready? Well, get them on, because it’s almost time for the annual Isle of Wight Walking Festival – the biggest of its kind in Europe. This year is the 17th anniversary of this incredible event, which has grown from around 39 walks in total to well over 200 walks. It runs from May 2nd to 17th, and is actually augmented later in the year by the Autumn Walking Weekend, which runs from October 23rd to 26th. What’s more, Whitecliff Bay is the perfect place to base yourself for this brilliant event.

Join us from May 1st, and you’ll be able to take part in many of the most interesting, highly rated walks, which take place on Saturday, May 2nd. Here is a brief rundown of some of the festival’s top walks:

Fossil Hunting Guided Tour

The perfect choice for dino fanatics, this guided tour covers 1.5 miles over 2 hours. Participants will see dinosaur footprints, fossil trees and more on this great adventure. Check the website for start times because it will depend entirely on the tides.

A Wight Cracking Walk

If you’re in the mood for a longer walk, then this one is for you. Starting at 09:30, it covers 14 miles in 6.5 hours – so, it’s pretty brisk! It won’t be so quick however that you don’t have chance to take in all the coastal scenes, the winding pathways, the woodlands and more. You’ll even get to take in the island’s famous Donkey Sanctuary!

WCB-OffPark-08Isle of Wight Challenge

This is the ultimate walking challenge, and is actually divided into three separate levels, depending on just how much you want to see in one walk. The full island challenge involves setting off at 07:30am, and traversing 66 miles, with periodic rest stops to recover your strength. If you manage to complete it, you’ll see all the finest coastal scenery that the island has to offer – it’ll take your breath away in more ways than one.

Check out the festival’s official website for more details. The hundreds of walks are broken down into distance and difficulty, so you can find the perfect one for you, depending on where you want to go and how hard you want it to be to get there. Browse the Whitecliff Bay website to find the best possible IOW accommodation deals in May, and book your next stay with us now.
