The name Sandy Balls dates back to the reign of King Henry VII when ‘sandyballas’ – domed sand and gravel outcrops on our western boundary first appeared on historic maps.
The land was bought by Ernest Westlake in 1919. In the early years it was home to a youth movement but his ultimate vision was to provide a beauty spot for families, and so in 1937 several log cabins were placed among the trees.
These later became home to evacuees during the war. During the 70’s and 80’s the village began to transform into the Sandy Balls of today – featuring luxury accommodation, five star facilities and a team which is renowned for its award-winning welcome!
